Greenery for Kids–Interior Design That Will Foster a Green Thumb

As the world focuses more and more on sustainability and greenery (and for good reasons), parents are asking how to foster a green thumb in their children. Or maybe, just fostering an interest in nature and gardening at large!

We had some fun coming up with ideas for creating a “green corner” in your Kid’s bedroom.

Create a Secret Garden for Reading

Put down some “fake grass” in one corner of the bedroom and corner it off with our fence divider. You can add some extra fencing for a larger area.

Inside, you can create a little reading area with a pile of pillows, or why not put up a tipi under a tree? If you can’t find a decorative tree, get some large branches and put them together in a heavy vase, attaching paper butterflies or flowers. It’s the perfect place for reading “The Secret Garden.”

Use fairy lights to create an enchanted atmosphere. You can hang them in the tree, or branches if you choose to set that up.

Create a Vertical Garden

Struggle with space? Create a vertical garden by hanging plants on a wooden trellis. This will allow the little ones to take care of their own plants. You can even plant seeds and see them grow into plants with some tender loving care (also known as regular watering!).

Tip:

Did you know that there are specific plants that help clean the air and provide oxygen? NASA discovered this many years ago. Having houseplants is therefore not just pretty, but also good for you and your little ones!

Be sure that you choose plants that are not poisonous. And if you fear that your kids might play rough with them when you leave the room, consider placing them on a shelf that’s out of reach.

Create an Herbal Garden

Is your Kids an aspiring chef or interested in botany? If you want them to learn the magic of food seasoning and herbal medicine, creating an herbal garden is a great place to start.

Choose between creating a play kitchen with herbs stacked on the shelves, or using regular shelves, or a table, for the herbs.

Of course, you can simply put potted herbs on the window sill or on a vertical wall as well.

Create a Regular Garden

Instead of creating a secret garden, you might want to create a regular garden. Do as mentioned above and put down some fake grass and fence off the area. But instead of having a reading nook, consider getting some potted plants to look after, a Wendy House to keep the garden tools and pots in, and a wheelbarrow to transport various things. You might even want to stack some wood in the Wendy House that can be transported in the wheelbarrow to your fireplace if you have one!

In Closing

Having a “green” area in your kid’s bedroom doesn’t only look great, it also fosters an interest in gardening, botany, and nature. You can also get creative and use it for counting (how many things can you put in the wheelbarrow?), colors (color the different pots), learning to read (write the names of the plants), and so forth.

Of course, there are also endless variations on a theme. For example, you could create a desert garden with rocks, growing succulents and cacti (that don’t sting). Or why not a rainforest, complete with all the animals you’d find there?
