6 Ways to Escape into the Great Indoors

With lockdowns and quarantines, a lot of parents have been struggling to find things to do with their children indoors. Not only that—even without lockdowns and quarantines there are rainy days. So what do you do on those rainy days? Here are some ideas for you.

The Wendy House

Whether you want to create a reading nook, a place where your child can “play house,” or a shed full of tools, a Wendy House can be a great addition to your child’s bedroom, or play area.

On rainy days, you can even use the house to play dress up—have your child enter Wendy’s house in one set of clothes and come out in another. You can also turn it into an office, a shop, or anything else that takes your child’s fancy that day. When it comes to what to do, the sky’s the limit.

The Teepee

Want to play Indians and Cowboys? Pretend to camp in the wilderness? Play gypsies? Or perhaps just create a super cozy reading nook fitted out with fairy lights? Then a teepee is in order. You can make one using a hula hoop ring and some old sheets, or buy one pre-made.

The Obstacle Course

While obstacle courses are usually built in the great outdoors, there’s no saying you can’t build them indoors, too. Use ropes, pillows, hula hoops, and whatever else you can think of to create a fun and stimulating obstacle course indoors.

Here are some tips.

The Science Experiment

One look at Pinterest and voila—you’ll find hundreds of science experiments you can do at home with your children. Chromatography flowers, shaving gel clouds that rain colors, and so on. There is really no excuse not to set your kids up to become future scientists.

Riddles and Hunts

Who says you can’t do “an Easter hunt” even though it isn’t Easter? Fun scavenger hunts filled with riddles are things you can compose yourself—or buy on Etsy!

Set Up a Mailbox

Yes, some people still write letters. And there’s nothing more personal in this day and age of the internet than a real letter! Get your little ones into the habit of writing to each other, their friends, or the family at large by making a post box and creating cards and letters together.
